see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_conditioning basically a gas is pumped through tubing inside the unit. When the gas is placed under pressure, it shrinks, and turns to liquid. This liquid is passed through coils of tubes, which form a grid through which air is blown. As the air passes over the tube coils, the liquified gas inside the tubes expands to form a gas, and in doing so it absorbs energy, (as heat) from the immediate environment,(the air), cooling the air and tubing. This expanded and heated gas is re-compressed and the cycle starts again. Look inside and around your refrigerator and you may see the same set up - n the back there is usually a compressor and tubing, and inside coils of tubes which are full of the expanding gas. T Hope this helps!!

To determine the amperage of a 4-ton air conditioner, you need to consider its efficiency and voltage rating. A typical 4-ton unit operates at about 15-20 amps on a 240V circuit. However, the exact amperage can vary based on the specific model and its energy efficiency rating. Always refer to the manufacturer's specifications for precise information.
