Almost all American manufacturers re-tooled during the war to produce war materials. The demand for war materials was staggering, and led to a huge boom in manufacturing - there was full employment for the first time since the beginning of the Depression. Many civilian goods were gone from the marketplace "for the duration", others were in short supply. Companies that had previously made things like juke boxes and postage meters retrofitted to make rifles and machine guns.
