New Zealand participated in World War II, helping the United States and Great Britain. After World War II, it was concerned with the spread of Communism. In May of 1965, Prime Minister Keith Holyoake agreed to send combat troops to Vietnam. Before that New Zealand had sent medical personal and combat engineers. The war was controversial and all of New Zealand's forces were out by 1972.
