They are most closely related to bull terriers and emerged from crossings between bull terriers and other terriers that were around in the 17th century.

These dogs provided the ancestral foundations for Staffordshire Bull Terriers, Bull Terriers, the American Pit Bull Terrier and the American Staffordshire Terrier. This common ancestor was known as the Bull and Terrier. After these bloodsports were eliminated in 1835 these dogs came to be used in dogfights.
