The relationship between Germany and France is synonomous with that of the U.S. and Japan because during WW2 the two countries were essentially the other's arch nemesis, but then after the war the same two countries began to cooperate with eachother to such an extreme that almost no other country cooperates with the two more than each other.
Essentially they went from being enemies to best friends, hell it can even be seen as a political marriage by some if that existed.
