The president is elected by the people through an alternative vote system. People give preferences for their candidates in order, voting for as many of the candidates as they like in order of preference. If a candidate has more that 50% of the first preferences, that candidate wins, otherwise the lowest candidate is eliminated and their second preferences are distributed amongst the other candidates. This process continues, until one candidate reaches enough votes to win. An presidential term is a maximum of 7 years, though an election could happen before that, should a president die or retire. There is no vice-president. A president can serve a maximum of two terms. A candidate can be elected unopposed if no other candidate stands, as happened in 2004 when Mary McAleese was elected for a second term unopposed, and no actual election was required.
A general election is held, electing 166 people to the Irish Parliament. There are various political parties and if one has an overall majority they will form the government. If no party has an overall majority parties will negotiate with each other and form a coalition government, by having their total together as a majority.
