Jess's family is poor, and have to work hard on a farm to make a living. Leslie's family do nothave money issues, and they write book for a living, which isn't easy, but is certainly easier than working on a farm or in a hardware store. Leslie's family consist of three people. Leslie, Mr. Burke, and Mrs. Burke. Jess's family consist of Brenda, Ellie, the baby, May Belle, Mrs. Aarons, and Mr. Aarons totaling to a number of six people, twice as many as the Burkes. Leslie's family have lived mainly in the city for most of there life, where as all of Jess's life has been spent on the farm.
Jess is a shy and artistic boy who struggles with self-confidence, while Leslie is outgoing, imaginative, and confident. Jess comes from a poor family and faces bullying at school, whereas Leslie comes from a wealthy family and is homeschooled.
