The truth is that the two are not related. John Glessner Lee, grandson of SDL, did extensive research on the family and could not find a connection. The kinship they had was because of SDL's time at West Point Military Academy...his best friend and roomate was the son of REL, G.W. Custis Lee. The Stephen D. Lee Home and Museum in Columbus, Mississippi has on display an original photograph of SDL, and GWCL together with JEB Stuart taken at West Point. There is also a letter to SDL from GWCL that accompanied a gift of REL's spurs and an embroidered and beaded watch case made in the slipper style. The museum also has many other civil war artifacts including the flag of the Tombigbee Rangers, CSA and an unidentified Confederate flag, possibly post war for the SCV. The Stephen D.
