Senators are appointed by the Governor General of Canada (as the Queen's representative) on the advice of the prime minister. Some provinces have adopted a framework to elect nominees, with the understanding that the prime minister would appoint as that province's senators only those who have been elected (though neither the Governor General nor the prime minister are bound by these elections).
Canadian senators are appointed by the Governor General (the Queen's representative) on the advice of the prime minister. To be appointed to the Senate, a Canadian must be at least thirty years of age, and hold at least $4000 of property. (To be appointed a senator for Québec, he or she must also be resident in the senatorial district which he or she is to represent.) Canadian senators serve until they reach seventy-five years of age.
Currently, recommendations for appointment to the Senate are entirely at the personal discretion of the prime minister; however, some provinces have created a framework for the election of recommended senators. Though neither the Governor General, nor the prime minister are bound to comply with these "elections", the current prime minister has encouraged the Governments of the provinces to adopt Senate electoral schemes, and has proposed a bill in the Senate to change the method of selection.
