They are equal and opposite (Newton's third law).Each action has an equal an opposite reaction. For example: pulling on a rubber band and letting it go will cause it to fly around. This is the action and related response or reaction desired.

For every action force, there is a reaction force. The correct wording of the statement, however, is for every force, there is an equal and opposite force.

For example, when a person sits on the chair, the person exerts a force on the chair which is equal to the force the chair exerts on the person.
