Because space is a vacuum, heat is only transferred by radiation or by conduction through contact with something else. Having said that, the surface of the space suit may rise and fall quite a bit when going in and out of the direct sunlight. The space suit regulates the temperature through use of a special garment close to the skin of the astronaut which circulates temperature controlled fluid. Temperature controlled air is also circulated, regulated by the life support system carried on the back. Multiple layers of insulation are also used to keep a constant temperature.

How are astronauts protected in space?

The space suit is what protects the astronauts the most, if they did not have these then there would be no more travelling to the space. Astronauts come across very extreme temperatures but luckily they are protected with their complex "suit of armour" that is snug fit and fully tight. At an altitude of 400 kilometres, the temperature can approximately drop from 120 °C to 150°C in a matter of minutes.

Are temperatures extreme in space because there is no air?

No because the temperatures in space are extreme because there is no gravity in space.
