They are both gray.
Basalt is not a foliated rock. It is an extrusive igneous rock formed from the rapid cooling of lava at or near the Earth's surface. Foliated rocks, such as slate or schist, have a banded or layered appearance due to the alignment of mineral grains.
BASALT is for igneous. SLATE is for metamorphic. LIMESTONE is for sedimentary.
Both basalt and gabbro are made from the same kind of molten rock with the same chemistry. It is relatively low in silica, but high in magnesia and iron. They both look alike when they are put next to each other.

it may well have come all the way from the ancient Egyptian word for slate which was bauhan & which may later have reached ancient greek as basanos & basanites also meaning slate as well as touchstone but this greek word basanites passed unchanged into classical latin & evolved over centuries & misspellings into medieval latin basaltes before reaching English as basalt in 1601
Shale turns into slate, granite into gneiss.
Slate is the metamorphic rock formed from shale. A pile of mud can turn into shale (a fine-grained sedimentary rock) with relatively low pressure, about 3 mi (5 km) down into the earth. With more pressure and some heat, shale can transform into slate. Metamorphic rock found closer to Earth's surface, or produced by low pressure, characteristically splits or flakes into layers of varying thickness. This is called foliation. Slate is often used as roofing tiles and paving stones.
