I am not certain but there is an Indian legend:

Long ago there was an indian tribe that wanted to cross then ocean to get to another island. A spirit made them a rainbow bridge. The children were all happy and bouncing around with excitment. Then they fell off the bridge! The adults were scared that the spirit would be angry at them, but the spirit took pity on them. She liked how they played. So the spirit turned the children into dolphins so they wouldn't drown. Then they can play forever.

This is sometimes the belief why dolphins are so smart and playful.
