An alligator has 5 front toes but 3 toenails. It has 4 toes on its back legs but consists of only 3 toenails. Its four tooth fits inside the mouth when the jaws are closed. Its snout is short, wide and is U shaped. A crocodile has 5 toes on all four legs. When a crocodile has its mouth closed the fourth tooth on either side of the mouth is exposed.
