Catholic AnswerNormally, empty Crosses are not used in worship at all. The Church has always used Crucifixes. A Crucifix is a cross with a representation of Our Blessed Lord's Body nailed to it. The Missal states that a Crucifix MUST be on or near the altar for the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Outside of the Mass, a Crucifix is placed on the coffin at a funeral, it is kissed on Good Friday, and it is carried in most processions. A sign of the cross (the large sign of the cross, made on the forehead, and shoulders) is made by people before praying and after prayer. When beginning any liturgical action, and pious people will make it before beginning any important action.
