If the Earthquake is powerful and releases a lot of energy (it has a large magnitude) this ground motion may be very severe and cause damage to buildings and other infrastructure.

If the earthquake is of a low magnitude or occurs a long distance away, then you will require a sensitive piece of equipment known as a seismometer to detect the seismic waves.
