Both woolly mammoths and elephants are grazers, which means that they predominantly eat grass. They both have tusks, a trunk, and four legs. Mammoths and elephants are similar in so many ways, that it's far easier to explain the differences between them.

The differences are as follows:

First, mammoths had very long, curved tusks. Second, they had long, brown hair for insulation. Third, mammoths had tiny ears compared to modern elephants. Fourth, they had longer forelimbs than hind limbs, whereas modern elephants have relatively equal length limbs and a mostly level back, mammoths did not.
