They are both different.

  1. Endothermic:- reactions that take in energy. For example:- electrolysis, thermal decomposition and the reaction between ethanic acid and sodium carbonate.
  2. Exothermic:- reactions that transfer energy to the surroundings. For example:- burning, neutralisation and the reaction between water and calcium oxide.

Both are type of chemical reactions but the basic difference lies in the energy.

In an endothermic reaction, energy has to be given from external source to make the reaction occur but in case of exothermic reaction, heat is evolved as products are formed.

Also, in former case the reactants are more stable as compared to products whereas in latter case the products are more stable.
