Manorialism is part of the feudal system.

In an age with poor communications and organisation, the feudal system worked as well as anything could to hold larger units together, principally for defence and security. It was territorially based, but depended on personal, not national or political, allegiance and devolved authority down from a supreme governor (under God, a King or Emperor was usually the supreme ruler).

The King granted to the greater lords areas of land to rule. On his part, he swore to use his greater power to come to their aid if attacked, while they swore to be loyal subjects and to turn out, with their people, to fight for the king for up to 40 days in any one year. They in their turn made grants on similar terms to lesser nobility and knights, whose land-grant might amount to as little as a single village (manor). In turn, the knight (often called lord) of the manor allowed land to the local farmers, most of whom were serfs and not allowed to leave the area, in exchange for subsistence and service in war.

The duty of the farmers and labourers on the manor to provide for their lord, either by rent in cash or kind or by customary service, allowed him, his sons (if adult) and their war-horses to be kept fit and in constant training for war. In the event of military service being called for, the King would call out the great lords, who called out their immediate dependants and so on. The whole system depended on personal loyalty - loyalty to inferiors as well as to superiors - and was thus constantly under strain when someone (at any point in the chain) tried to collect the benefits of the system without honouring his own side of the bargain. With all its faults, however, it lasted for hundreds of years.

How is feudalism and manor system connected?

AnswerThey are one and the same. Not different. AnswerThere is some disagreement as to what feudalism is, but manorialism is part of it in any case. The manorial system developed from the Roman villa system, to which it was very similar. The feudal system was developed somewhat later as a way of distributing power in a society with a weak central government in the face of immediate threats to local stability to which that government could not respond. Please see the links below. AnswerIt depends on one's usage. In Marxism, feudalism constitutes a social formation incorporating the manorial system. Most non-Marxist specialists use feudalism in a far narrower sense to denote the relationships of the knightly elite: in this version, feudalism sits at the pinnacle of the manorial system. To Marxists and others sharing their view of feudalism as a broad social order, feudalism would tend to predate classical manorialism, which is merely one of its expressions, though manorial economy incorporates substantial pre-feudal elements. In the stricter usage, feudalism arose from the eighth century when much of the manorial system was already in place.

How did the manorial system start to decline?

The Manorial System, along with Feudalism, started to decline at the end of the Crusades. Those who had gone to the Middle East to fight had come back with dyes, silks, incense, spice, etc. They sold the goods that they had brought back, increasing trade and boosting the economy. Europe also started switching over to a monetary system, so now serfs could buy their freedom from the Lord and move to the cities and out of the country. All these things attributed to the decline or the Manorial system and Feudalism.

What was the responserbility of a Monk in the feudal system?

Monks were not part of the feudal system. They were part of the Church clergy and held no land of their own; they owed no feudal obligation to any overlord and were not governed by the king's law.The Church as an institution held land and might also have manors, peasants and knights owing feudal obligations to an abbot or bishop, but monks were in no way connected with any of this.
