At one point, Portuguese and Gallego (Galician) were the same language. That separated only due to political reasons. Now that Galicia is part of Spain, the langauge has been heavily influenced by Spanish.

Orthographically, it is much closer to spanish, but phonetically, it still shares alot with Portuguese.
