A genre can be defined on any criteria. For example, Westerns are defined by happening in a particular place at a particular time, the Western Frontier of North America; Action literature is defined by action packed plot and is independent of time or location; Romance literature is defined by romantic plots and themes; Science Fiction is defined more by subject matter.

The Literary genre is defined mostly on the style of writing, where how something is said is more important that what is said.

Sonnet, Drama
