How can kids help save the deserts?

It is unlikely that any person can individually change the climate of a desert.

Collectively we can do a lot about altering the current climate change pattern. Global warming, caused mainly by too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere as a result of centuries of burning fossil fuels, will increase evaporation and thus increase rainfall and generally it will reduce current deserts. But that will go along with more violent tropical storms and a raised sea level.

Humans are helping the desert by conserving water so it will be much more water in the desert for thirsty plants and animals. Also humans are helping the desert is by not stepping on small animals because they can kill some of the plants. Another way humans help the desert is by sweating a lot and the sweat evaporates and makes more water for when it rains.

Do not leave trash or dump used oil in the desert. Drive only on established roads and trails. Do not remove plants and animals from the desert - take only pictures. Do not kill animals encountered in the desert. The desert is the home of some venomous reptiles but they will not harm a person if they do not feel threatened. Remember, you are only a visitor to the desert but the desert is the home of these animals.

Climate change is contributing to the spread of deserts. However, poor farming practices and overgrazing by livestock is currently doing the most damage. Local people along the fringes of the desert need to be educated so as to slow the spread of deserts. This is especially true in the Sahel region south of the Sahara.
