Jet Airplanes are faster then Turbo Prop airplanes due to the compression of air and the subsequent high pressure output of said air via the enclosed engine nacelles of the jet aircraft. Props rely solely on their ability to push air behind to create forward motion. Jets utilize compression as a multiplier thereby making their thrust far more productive, efficient, and powerful.

Planes require more thrust then drag. Jet engines produce far more thrust per pound then a conventional prop engine can. There are some pretty impressive prop planes as far as speed goes, but a prop is limited to the speed of sound for it's blade tips. That is a limiting factor for speed of the plane.
