Latitude gives the angle, and therefore the distance from, the equator, which is a north to south distance.

Longitude gives the angle, and therefore the distance, from the arbitrary Prime Meridian, thus defining locations by their distances east to west.

Latitude lines, such as the equator, run horizontally on maps. Longitude lins, such as the International Date line, run vertically.
