Lipids constitute a broad group of naturally occurring moleculesthat include fats, waxes, sterols, fat-soluble vitamins (such as vitamins A, D, E, and K), and others. The main functions of lipids are energy storage, as structural components of cell membranes, and as important signaling molecules.

The lipids are a heterogeneous group of compounds related to fatty acids.

  • lipids are actually chemical name of fats(unsaturated fatty acids) or oils(saturated fatty acids)

its uses are:

  • they used to store energy as they contain double amount of energy than same amount of any carbohydrate(because they have higher proportion of C-H bonds and low proportion of oxygen)
  • lipids are components of cellular membranes in the form of glycolipids and glycoproteins.
  • act as water proof material because they are hydrophobic in nature
  • they are present in the form of cutin in the cuticle of epidermis of some plants and prevent excessive loss of water
  • they provide insulation against heat and cold
  • they constitute the exoskeleton of some insects as waxes and provide mechanical protection.

It depends on the solvent

How do insoluble compound from fram soluble compound?

If you are meaning how does an insoluble compound differ from a soluble compound, an insoluble compound does not dissolve in a given solvent, usually water, and a soluble compound does dissolve.

What is the general solubility of hydrocarbons in water?

hydrocarbons are not soluble in a polar solvent but are soluble in a non-polar solvent.

What dose soluble mean?

A solute is a solid that dissolves in the liquid. The liquid is called the solvent. Together, they make the solution. If the solute dissolves in the solvent, it means that the solid is soluble. If it doesn't, it is insoluble.

Is the following combinations expected to be soluble or insoluble polar solute and non-polar solvent?

A polar solute would be insoluble in a non-polar solvent. The rule of thumb is "likes dissolve likes".

What does soluble and insoluble mean?

Materials like salt and sugar will dissolve in the water and are called soluble as they dissolve completely in the water, where as substances that do not dissolve in water like sand are called insoluble materials.

When dissolved salts?

Salts can be soluble or insoluble. The solubility depends principally on solvent, temperature, pressure rtc.

Could freezing point depression be used for substances that are not soluble in water?

Substances which are insoluble in a given solvent do not cause a freezing point depression in that solvent.

In which solvent Iron oxide is soluble?

Iron oxide is only soluble when placed in concentrated mineral acids. It is insoluble in organic and water based solvents.

Is silver nitrate or silver chloride or silver carbonate more soluble in a polar solvent?

Silver nitrate is soluble in water but chloride and carbonate are insoluble.

What solvent would you use to measure the density of napthalene acid?

water b/c it is insoluble in water. it is soluble in cyclohexane and sparingly soluble in ethyl alcohol.

Is sugar souble or insoluble in water?

Sugar is soluble in water forming a sugar solution. The sugar would be the solute. The water would be the solvent.
