Why not pick something to apply the three terms to so we can get a visual? A red clay brick is an easy object to see with the mind's eye. Mass is the "amount" of material we have, but, since mass is "weight" in a gravimetric field, we'll use the term weight instead. Our brick weighs about 2700 grams. If we measure it and find its volume (length x width x thickness), we'll get about 1400 cubic centimeters. We can now use its weight and volume to find its density. Density is the weight of the material per unit of volume. It weighs 2700 g and is 1400 cc in volume, so how much does 1 cc (one unit of its volume) weigh? 2700 divided by 1400 equals 1.93, so the density of the brick is 1.93 grams per cubic centimeter. Now to specific gravity. Specific gravity is a comparison of the density of a given material to the density of water. Water has a density of 1 gram per cubic centimeter (at 4 degrees C). That makes the math really easy. 1.93 g/cc compared to 1 g/cc equals a specific gravity of 1.93 for the clay in the brick. Note that specific gravity has no units associated with it. It's a number only. We've used mass and volume to find density, and then compared the density of our stuff to that of water to find its specific gravity. Piece of cake.
