How are molds categorized?

Molds are considered to be microbes and do not form a specific taxonomic or phylogenetic grouping, but can be found in the divisions Zygomycota and Ascomycota. There are Fungi known as molds. Slime molds and water molds are not Fungi. There are Fungi known as molds. Slime molds and water molds are not Fungi.
Two broad groups of slime molds are recognized. The individual cells of cellular slime molds remain distinct-- separated by cell membranes-- during every phase of the mold's life cycle. Slime molds that pass through a stage in which their cells fuse to form large cells with many nuclei are called acellular slime molds.
