Risk management requires the doctor to develop a trustworthy and confident relationship with the patient. In order for the patient to trust the doctor, the doctor should try to limit the patient's unrealistic expectations, based on the media, what is heard from friends and family, past experiences, etc. By educating the patient about the risks, possible results, and probable results of any procedure or medication, the patient will be more informed about what to expect, and he/she is more likely to be satisfied with the result. Patient satisfaction is related to risk management because dissatisfaction can lengthen the recovery period, or cause the patient stress, anxiety, despression, or other negative side effects.
