Music and poetry both have a continuous rhythm. They can have a beat of any kind, and are composed.

All songs are. Lyrics are a form of poetry. (:
Really poetry is just more of a complication of words used to make lyrics but all in all poetry is just like a song. ___ Although a lot of poetry can be made into songs fairly easily, it isn't a requirement. Poetry in general isn't really about lyrics to a song, and many modern poems would be really difficult to make songs out of. Interestingly, though, lyric poetry was so named because it was usually written to be accompanied by the lyre. It isn't really that way anymore... the difference now is usually that lyric poetry often retains a form (like the sonnet form), and it is personal... expressing feelings or emotions. You can write one without worrying about having it accompanied by the lyre now, though. :)
