River are often used as a source of fresh drinking water, as a means of transportation, as a source of hydro-electric power, for bathing, and for disposing of waste. Rivers have been of use to humans since pre-historic times, when the first civilisations built themselves upon the banks of river such as the Tigris and the Euphrates. These civilisations grew near rivers because they offered a defensible position against the attacks of neighbouring tribes, as well as fertile soil. even today many farms are planted alongside rivers. this fertility comes from the fact that rivers use hydraulic action the erode away at rocks and stones, the particles are often nutrient rich, and are deposited downstream as the river slows. these nutrients are then absorbed into the soil. In many remote and heavily forested areas the only way to travel is by boat.
