Traditionally, scarves were knitted using sheep's wool, using short rows of stitches on knitting needles, and adding rows on the end until the required length had been reached. scarves could also be made from woven fabric, cut to something like 6 to 10 cm wide, and 100 or more centimetres long. Some people favoured a longer knitted scarf - typically students sporting their very long university scarves - which could be wrapped round their necks a couple of times).
