Soil organisms are classified based on their size such as micro, meso or micro-organisms. Some organisms are classified by their ecological functions which are herbivores, detritivores, predators, fungivores, bacterivores or parasites. They can also be classified as autotrophs, heterotrophs, aerobes, or anaerobes depending on their requirements of carbon and oxygen.

Because soil has some of the mostnutrients in it like wood, decomposing animals, minerals, plants and water. Plus its all ground up into tiny bits so it is easier for smaller animals like bugs to eat. there is a whole food chain going on in there with all the plants and bugs it attracts because so many things eat those plants and bugs and microscopic organisms. Also one of the most important parts of soil are decomposers like banana slugs and worms because things eat their "poop" and things feed off them to. over all there is a whole diversity of life going on and so many possibilities!
