A committee is appointed by the American Library Association. They review all the candidates (400+ books!) and select the top few. The committee then decides the winner and whether any books deserve to be designated as honor books.
the newberry honor award goes to special books :-)
Laura received a variety of awards and honoraria during her life, all connected to her contribution to children's literature. The biggest award - the Newberry - was not instituted until after she had finished writing, but several of her books were retroactively made "Newberry Honor" books.
Yes, she is famous because she wrote nine books about her childhood and seven of them got Newberry Awards.
Five of Laura's books won the Newberry Honor Award (On the Banks of Plum Creek, By the Shores of Silver Lake, The Long Winter, Little Town on the Prairie and These Happy Golden Years). The reason none of her books won the Newberry Award Medal is that she had finished the books before the Newberry Award was created.
