After each election for the Dutch House of Representatives, the parties start negotiating for a coalition. Once a coalition is agreed on, the monarch appoints the leader of the largest coalition party as the Prime Minister, by decree. This is a formality because the House of Representatives can dismiss the Prime Minister with a majority vote.
The most recent coalition was formed after the 2010 election with the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (31 seats), the Party for Freedom (24) and the Christian Democratic Appeal (21). Together the coalition holds 76/150 seats in the House of Representatives. The leader of the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy, Mark Rutte, was appointed Prime Minister.
