A Covenant is a Divine Contract between God and man. They began very specific or narrow, enlarging to the New Covenant. The Mosaic Covenant, aka the Sinaic Covenant or the Old Covenant was primarily a 'physical blessings for specific actions (like a contract) that incorporated ritualistic sacrifices that pointed to or pictured the Coming Messiah. These sacrifices could not erase the guilt of sin we each carry.

Paul was inspired to tell us why God gave us the New Covenant in Hebrews:

Hebrews 8:6-10New King James Version (NKJV)

6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises.

A New Covenant

7 For if that first covenant had been faultless, then no place would have been sought for a second. 8 Because finding fault with them, He says: "Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah- 9 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they did not continue in My covenant, and I disregarded them, says the LORD. 10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, says the LORD: I will put My laws in their mind and write them on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

Amendments to the Old Covenant included the discontinuance of sacrifices as we have in Jesus the perfect sacrifice paid for all sin. The need of Levitical priesthood as we now have an eternal Priest, Jesus, in the order of Melchizedek. It fully enlarged all who could partake of this New Covenant from the OC House of Israel only to now include all Gentiles. BUT the Law was not changed - one jot or tittle. A most important point. Finally, the Holy Spirit of God was only given to a very few in the Old Covenant - Patriarchs, some Kings and Prophets. In the New Covenant, the Spirit of God/Christ is available for all who are called to repentance (John 6:44, 65).

Was the second covenant the old testament or the New Testament?

God made many covenants in the Old Testament, but I assume you are speaking about the "New Covenant" vs the "Old Covenant" which God gave Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai. The "New Covenant" or second was mentioned in the Old Testament several times as a covenant which was yet future. The "New Covenant" started in the New Testament when Jesus Christ died on the cross of Calvary, was buried, and was resurrected the third day. The 'Old Covenant" was by Law and the "New Covenant" was by grace.

What is difference between old covenant and new covenant?

As for the old covenant we fell under the Mosiac Law and now for the new covenant we fall under the grace of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Answer To get a fuller understanding of this subject, read the book of Hebrews in the Bible,it might take you an hour.... tops. It was wrote primarily to explain that very thing, and how the new covenant that replaces the old is a better permanant one that replaces a temporary one that was a foreshadow of the new one that was to come. What is another word beside testament?

You could use the word "covenant" The Old Testament was the old covenant concerning the law and the New Testament is the new covenant which explains the Grace of God to mankind in sending His only begotten Son into the world to save sinners. The old covenant is no longer in force. Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but through Him (Jesus Christ)

the resurrection of christAdditional Comments:The New Covenant provides a better relationship with God than that portrayed in the Old Covenant. This is available only through Christ - our new High Priest and eternal sacrifice for the sins of man - for all who truly repent to receive God's Holy Spirit - being accepted by God as His new sons and daughters.Note: None of the spiritual principles that reflect the mind and character of God revealed in the Old Covenant have been abandoned by the new.
