Religious themes in folk art are traditionally Hindu and are inspired by Hindu mythologies - stories fro the 2 epics Ramayana and Mahabharata and also from the Puranas. Some Christian themes are later addition, but even Muslim craftspeople use Hindu legends, myths and symbols (for example, in Kalamkari). The interesting this is that inspiration might come from a more Sanskritised, Vedic background, and sometimes come from Tantric, local legends and tribal background.

Social themes generally are found in representation of everyday activities (for example in Warli painting) where stylised figures are shown doing rural activity of farming, household work or just celebrating life with song and dance. Lately, folk forms (not just painting, but also song and dance) have been successfully used to speak of current social (example: Patachitra) and political issues (example: Yakshagana).

Hope this was useful.
