First rib is almost fixed and over it the rest of the rib cage move to expand and contract. 11 th and 12 th ribs are attached to rib cage above on one hand by muscles. Below the same ribs are attached to hip bone by quadratus lumborum muscle. So this arrangement gives rib cage mobility on one hand and stability on the other hand. Two ribs give better mobility than one could have given and three ribs are not needed.
