The outback still contains scattered towns, where there are small "bush hospitals", well enough equipped for the sorts of injuries and illnesses most common to that area, or at least equipped enough to care for people until they can be transferred to a larger hospital in another city. However, people of the Australian outback rely heavily upon the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The RFDS uses small aircraft to bring emergency medical attention to people, and to airlift them to better facilities elsewhere. The aeroplanes are specially designed to be able to take off and land on short, rough landing strips which many outback properties have. They are like a flying ambulance, with doctors and nurses, but they service thousands of square kilometres of land.
