Soap making is correctly called "saponification"

It is a proces wwhere an alkali is contacted with a fat to produce a molecule which dissolves in oil at one end and water at the other. This allows oils to be removed and washed aay.

Apparatus and reagents

• 58 milliliters of coconut oil
• 50 milliliters of sodium chloride
• 10 grams of sodium hydroxide
• Two 500 mL beakers
• 100 mL measuring cylinder
• Thermometer ( 0 - 110 centigrade range )
• Glass rod
• A burner

Method

Measure approximately 6 grams of sodium hydroxide. Dissolve it in around 20 mL of water. Measure 25 mL of coconut oil and add it to a beaker and gradually warm it up to 95 centigrade temperature. Meanwhile, mix the sodium hydroxide solution into the oil drop-wise. Subsequently, add 50 mL of warm water. Warm it until the mixture partially condenses. Stop heating and add 100 mL of the saturated sodium chloride solution. Stir the mixture well and keep it at rest for at least a half and a hour.

In this method, sodium chloride is added to make the condensing of the mixture in a lesser time. 'Talo', is also a good substitute for coconut oil.

Alternative method

Dissolve 10 grams of sodium hydroxide in 28 mL of water at the room temperature. Take 55 g (58 mL) of coconut oil to a beaker and heat it up to 70 centigrade degrees. Add the sodium hydroxide solution while stirring the content thoroughly. Stir till the mixture condenses, and pour it into the moulds of the desired shapes. Keep it at rest for at least an hour, and then extract the soap.

In this method, all measurements should be accurate as possible for best results.
