Graham Greene's book was made into that classic brit movie of the same title with Richard Attenborough in the leading role as 'Pinkie'. It was remade in 2010, however the earlier version most probably reflects the how women were considered and treated at that time. Despite having served in the armed forces, worked in factories and generally taken over the 'home front' role during wwII women were still not on an equal par with men, right up until the 1960's a woman's place was in the home. Pinkie's attitude in the film is extreme but generally accepted as the norm.
