What is the source of electric current onboard the space shuttle?

Electric current supplies energy to the life supports systems that provide air and water for the astronauts.

How will the process of transpiration benefit astronauts on long space trips?

Transpiration is a natural process of an astronaut. In toilets, the waste is collected in bags. This waste content is reused for life essential systems on the ISS.

What causes space sickness?

Generally, in space, astronauts & cosmonauts are in a constant state of free fall--the same feeling when you go down a large hill in a roller coaster--but for several hours/days/weeks/months. So primarily, motion sickness. But also, the human circulatory systems has evolved to exist with gravity. In orbit, these mechanisms malfunction, and fluid tends to accumulate in the head--causing puffy eyes and faces. Typically, people adjust to these changes in a day or two. Some unfortunate people never adapt, and have a miserable time in space.

When will the United States send a manned mission to Mars?

It is not known when this will happen. But if it does it will be a long difficult task keeping the astronauts fit and healthy. The journey would take 9 months one way, and then there is the length of time spent on or near the planet. Bones and other body systems will weaken, supplies of food and other necessities will have to be brought, as well as systems to replenish and clean the air. Astronauts will be exposed to radiation no matter how well insulated the ship is. As exciting as manned space travel is, we would greatly benefit if initial explorations of the planets were done with unmanned probes. This might be the best approach at least for the next several decades, until we can master vehicle systems that will make manned missions efficient. With unmanned probes, all of the mass, engineering and fuel needed for basic life support can be eliminated or replaced with science systems. Robot systems will get better and better, and we don't have to worry about how to process a robot's urine or other wastes.

How do you recyle water in a space station up in space?

On the International Space Station, the vast majority of water is recycled. Water is expensive to transport into space, so it is vital that every last drop be conserved. Water is recycled from a variety of sources, such as: the sink, shower, space suit wastewater (Each space suit uses tubes full of cold water to cool astronauts while they are on EVA), water from heating and cooling systems, moisture in the air (Exhaled by astronauts and lab animals), the Space Shuttle's fuel cells (The fuel cells convert oxygen and hydrogen into water to produce power), and even from the urine of astronauts and lab animals. The water is purified through a rigorous process that is even more efficient than sewage treatment plants so that it can be used again. Some water is lost through the airlock, carbon dioxide removal systems, and oxygen generation systems, although at least 95% of the water onboard the space station is reused. Every once in a while, new water is brought to the space station onboard the Space Shuttle or through Russian Progress Resupply ships.they recycle the water thru a machine by filtering water 5 times a minute for an hour
