Leprosy, Hansens Disease, is very serious and can be life threatening. However if treated early, sufferers can be cured with anitbiotics and life normal lives. There are two forms, one more serious than the other. If left untreated permanent nerve damage can result, along with bad lesions and lumps on the skin. Extremities can be lost, mostly because feeling is lost, and trauma to them goes unnoticed. There is no need to isolate sufferers in 'leper colonies' that were popular in the 18th and 19th centuries.
