In modern times, the largest "lizards" are alligators, which can grow as long as 25 feet. Prehistoric alligators could be a monstrous 45 feet in length and yes, they ate dinosaurs. Later alligators in prehistoric times were known to bring down mastodon, members of the elphant family. Word of the wise you don't want to get close to those things, or you'll lose a limb.
