Its drainage basin covers an area of 2,670,000 square miles [6,915,000 square kilometers]. The drainage basin takes up 40 percent of the South American continent. The Amazon drainage basin passes through seven countries: Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela.
