London was a fairly small city within a defensive wall and with three important castles. The wall has mostly disappeared, but the course it took is preserved in London place names (particularly those of the medieval gates). Outside the wall the city began to expand into the countryside.
Starting on the east, the Tower of London guarded the Thames riverbank and the eastern part of the city wall, which ran north to Aldgate and Bishopsgate, then west to Moorgate, Cripplegate and on to Aldersgate, Newgate and Ludgate in the far west. On this western side were Montfichet castle and castle Baynard.
