During the Middle Ages, most people were serfs, and their houses often consisted of a single, rather large, room.

Manorial estates had larger houses for more important people, but the largest was the manor house, which could have been as small as an ordinary house of today, but was usually much larger. One difference between the manor house and a mansion of today was that the manor house had a great hall, which was a large room with a very high ceiling at the roof. The great hall was usually divided with partitions into smaller spaces, which included living quarters, offices, the dining area, and so on.
