Anything that needs to be proven can be proven by unequivocal scientific tests. Science has had its own share of mistaken beliefs and quackery that had to be proven or disproven and has become rigorous in these investigations. In short, this would mean the proof have to have a predetermined outcome and has to be measurable, repeatable, demonstrable by anyone doing the experiment (not just those with a point to prove). The test would have to preclude real world explanations. In short the atheist and theist would have to set up the "hoops" that god would have to "jump through", it would have to be done repeatedly and on command, it testing would have to be done by a non-interested third party and the results evaluated in a double blind manner.
No theist has ever risen to this challenge relying instead on fallacious arguments and unsupported reports.
Those experience in developing rational proof have however developed significant supportable evidence for the nonexistence of gods. Theists exposed to it often come away convinced to change their position.
