You can get a copy of previous tax returns (IRS calls these transcripts) from IRS by calling 1-800-829-1040, or order by mail using IRS Form 4506T (Request for Transcript of Tax Return). There is no fee for transcripts. It takes two weeks for delivery.

When do you need to file income tax returns?

Federal income tax returns need to be filed by April 15. Most state tax returns also need to be filed by April 15 with a few exceptions. If you have not yet filed your tax return for 2008 or an earlier years, just do it now even though it's late. If any penalty applies, it will only get worse the longer you wait.

Do you pay capital gains tax if you roll the profit into a new home?

The law changed in 1997. Before that, you had to buy a new home to avoid capital gains tax. The law no longer cares what you do with the money from the sale of the old home. If the house was your main home for two of the previous five years and you owned the home for two of the previous five years, the first $250,000 in capital gains is exempt from tax. The exemption increases to $500,000 if you file jointly and it was also the main home of your spouse for two of the previous five years.

What happens if you have not filed a tax return for 4 years?

What can happen for failing to file income tax returns would depend on a lot of things. It is possible that the IRS will file a substitute income tax return for you with out all of your possible deductions that you may be entitled to claim if you were to file your own income tax returns and complete them correctly. You could miss out some refund amounts that you may have been due but failed to file your income tax within the required time period that you had for that purpose and the refund would no longer be available to you.

Who else has access to my unemployment status?

Only you have access to your unemployment status. However, the people at the Unemployment Office do have access to your information. Also, your previous and sometimes next to last employer are aware that you are filing for unemployment & they receive a copy of what you say when you file for unemployment, but that is all. For example, if when you file you state that you are "laid off due to a lack of work", that information will be sent over to your employer so they can make their response for the reason (s) that you are no longer employed with that company.
