After that, you need to do everything you can to pay down your balances. See if your creditors will work with you to come up with lower interests and monthly payments, and use a budget to find where you can save money that you can put toward your debts. If at all possible, leave your credit cards at home; this will keep you from adding to your debt while you are trying to pay it off. Make sure to make your payments on time, and pay as much over your minimum payment as you can afford, focusing on the highest interest rates first. If you are so overwhelmed that you cannot pay your minimum payments, contact a credit counseling service. They may be able to help you further. Once you have gotten your debt down by paying off all credit cards and getting current on any long term debts (car payment, mortgage, etc.) you may start building your credit
