By not having sex. Please tell your partner before you have sex that you have Herpes (if you do).
Please understand that you can have herpes lesions in more places that just genitals. Herpes sores can occur in/on your mouth, in the eyes, and other places. So you need to know where your lesions occur and watch for new lesions that may occur on other parts of your body.
Also remember that you can transmit the herpes virus even when you are not having an outbreak, so you need to wear a condom whenever you have genital sex. If you are female, you could use a female condom which covers a larger area.
There are medications you can take that will reduce the number and severity of outbreaks and help them heal faster. If you feel you cannot afford expensive meds, go to your health clinic or planned parenthood clinic (planned parenthood helps with STDs, as well as Birth Control), which is free or based on income.
Do not feel that you are doomed to no sex life. All you have to do is be willing to change your usual sex practices for those that will allow you to enjoy sex while protecting you and your partner from infection or reinfection.
ADDENDUM:
The real beauty of herpes is that it is so opportunistic. Any skin to skin contact or fluid to skin contact can spread it. What this means is that in addition to your sexual partner(s) you should let your Wrestling team partners, your dentist, your mom (or whoever might kiss your owees), your barber, etc know. And don't forget all your drinking buddies if you cough on them or you are a "spraying" talker after a few beers.
Any sexual activity involving genital-genital contact can transmit the herpes virus.
Women are more apt to catch and transmit the infection.
Herpes is a virus that can appear either in the mouth area or in the genital area (HS-1 or HS-2). It causes the development of blisters that tend to scab over and heal with time (typically a few days.) It is not deadly. However, it is not curable either. People simply have to live with it. People who have Herpes can lead relatively normal lives. The issue of Herpes would only really come up under certain circumstances. For example, when people with Herpes have outbreaks, it can be both psychologically and physically uncomfortable. Herpes sores that appear in the mouth tend to be visible and thus makes the person uncomfortable. It is not recommended that people with visible mouth blisters kiss someone, as it is possible to transmit the virus this way. The issue of genital sores is equally uncomfortable as it may affect the sex lives of those infected and their partners. Again, the virus can be transmitted sexually. Most doctors would recommend that herpes patients refrain from unprotected sex during herpes outbreaks. Furthermore, studies have suggested that people can also transmit the virus to others even when obvious blisters are not present. Bottom line--there is no absolutely safe time for a herpes patient to have unprotected sex without risking infecting a partner.
The risk of acquiring HIV infection through kissing is very small. However, people who are not receiving proper therapy can become infected with the virus and transmit it to others. The risk of acquiring a herpes virus infection through kissing is much greater and herpes virus infection is not as harmless as was once believed.
If there is absoloutly no sign or symptom of a cold sore then you're less likely to spread it. You're more likely to pass it around the time a break out occurs and while the sore is healing.
